Of Frames, Futures, and a New Year

Geisha Mamehana Dancing Kurokami

Sometimes in photography (and in life) it's what's outside the frame that is even more interesting than what's inside it.

Although this is a portrait of the geisha Mamehana performing the dance "Kurokami," I always wonder what she is looking at as she gazes into the distance. What does she see there?

Of course, I could've asked Mamehana what she pictures at this moment in the dance, but that would ruin all the fun. I think it's better to leave it to the imagination.

As we enter the last few days of 2015, I find myself peering into the future like Mamehana is here, although not as gracefully. I won't spoil the suspense and tell you what I see, but I do hope your 2016 is filled with memorable experiences, laughter, and beauty.

Have a happy new year, everyone!
