Maiko and Momiji: Makiko
In the past week here in Kyoto the weather has gotten considerably colder, and the maple leaves have started to change color, seemingly overnight.
November has always been one of my favorite months to photograph maiko because their hair ornaments and kimono mirror the bright yellows, oranges, and reds of the changing autumn leaves (momiji in Japanese).
I thought it would be a bright and cheery way to finish the year with a series of photos of maiko and geiko with momiji kanzashi or dance props, so I will spend the next month posting portraits with a maple leaf theme. I'm beginning today with a photograph of Makiko, and I will feature Manaha, Tanewaka, and Mamehana in the coming weeks.
I hope you have a chance to enjoy the last few weeks of the fall and its colors before winter comes!
