Maiko Suzuha at Setsubun
The maiko Suzuha of Gion Kobu ascends the stage at Yasaka Shrine on February 3, 2005 during Setsubun. Suzuha was one of the most popular maiko during her time, but she retired several years ago after becoming a geiko for a brief period. There is still an advertisement of her reading a book in the Junkudo bookstore on Shijo Dori in Kyoto. Another photograph I made of Suzuha on the same day appeared in my first book, One Hundred Views of Maiko and Geiko (2006). I chose that photograph over this one because of the expression on Suzuha's face and the cleaner background, but this image shows the beautiful pattern of her kimono and obi in much more detail.
