Unconscious Connections

Otagi-Nembutsuji-rakan-2

This is another photo from Otagi Nenbutsu-ji temple that shows how my unconscious works when I'm photographing. I made this photograph because I knew I liked two of the rakan here: the one in the back right corner of the frame and the one in the left foreground. I didn't stop to ask myself why; I never do. It's more important not to think and just go with whatever feels right at the moment. It wasn't until later that I realized that the rakan in the back right bears a striking resemblance to Mick Jagger, the idol of one of my closest relatives. Was my unconscious aware of this when I took the photo? I still don't know, and another of life's great mysteries remains unsolved...
