The Geisha and Maiko Archives
I've been going through my collection of geisha and maiko photographs, and it has been a surprisingly emotional experience for me. Some of the photos bring back wonderful memories of one of the happiest times in my life, the four years I was working on my first book, One Hundred Views of Maiko and Geiko. Looking at other photos is bittersweet because many of the women left the Flower and Willow World years ago, and there is very little, if anything, to mark their passing. Some of these maiko and geiko were very kind to me, and others I hardly knew at all. Our lives intersected for a brief moment as they passed by me on a street in Gion Kobu or Miyagawa-cho, and I was able to capture these encounters with my camera. Their lives and mine have moved on, but the moment we shared remains.
I would like to share these moments so they will not be lost. Consequently, in the coming months, I will be posting galleries of my geisha and maiko archives here. I'm beginning with 2003-2004 (which I posted a few days ago), and I'll continue with 2005-2006, 2007, and with galleries featuring special events like Setsubun and Baikasai. You'll find them all in the Blog Galleries at the top right of this page.
I hope you enjoy them!
